OpenRouter is the standard for accessing hundreds of AI models through one API. But it is a US entity: contract under US law, invoicing in dollars, and data transfers your DPO may question. Why developers look for an EU alternative
For most of the market, OpenRouter is fine. But there is a growing group of EU companies — healthcare, finance, government, and their suppliers — where procurement and the Data Protection Officer will not simply approve the use of a US intermediary for AI traffic. For them the technology is not the problem, but the jurisdiction: under which law does your API traffic fall, where is it processed, and who can be compelled to look?
What Gatewaybird keeps equal to OpenRouter
Gatewaybird uses the OpenAI-compatible schema you already know: POST /v1/chat/completions with the same fields for model, messages and streaming. Swap base URL and API key, and your existing code runs. The consumption model is similar too: buy credits, spend per token, no subscription required.
What Gatewaybird does differently
Your contract is with a Dutch private limited company under EU law. Your invoice is in euros with Dutch VAT, payable via iDEAL or SEPA. Request processing happens inside the EU, with a data processing agreement and a published list of sub-processors. No US entity in the chain you did not choose.

Is Gatewaybird an exact OpenRouter clone?
In API contract, yes: Gatewaybird speaks the same OpenAI-compatible schema, so migration is swapping base URL and key. As an organisation it is the opposite: a Dutch entity, EU law, euro invoicing and processing inside the EU.
Can I keep using my existing OpenAI SDK?
Yes. Because the endpoint is OpenAI-compatible, the official OpenAI client works with a different base URL. Frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex and Vercel AI SDK also work through their OpenAI provider.
What does Gatewaybird cost compared to OpenRouter?
Gatewaybird charges the upstream provider price plus a pass-through margin announced at launch. The price comparison on this site shows the upstream prices per model so you can calculate for yourself. You pay in euros without exchange-rate surcharges on your credit card.
Is my data processed inside the EU?
That is the point of the product. The proxy runs on EU infrastructure. Note: the model you call may run outside the EU — that depends on the provider you choose. Gatewaybird shows per provider where processing happens, and a published sub-processor list is coming.
